Space Swap Dear Author Letter

s&s-assigned
If you're still waiting for this to be filled, my apologies for the lateness,

General likes and dislikes first off.

Likes: I like fluff, character pieces, competence, and 2nd person. I also enjoy angst, dark!fic or horror, vignettes, crossovers, gen, het, slash, femslash, things that deal with how humans don't always act rationally or think things through from an objective point of view, philosophical meanderings without it being expressly philosophical, relationships that don't always work out, mundane tasks, curtain!fic, platonic relationships that mirror romantic relationships without actually being romantic (think zucchinis and queerplatonic if that helps), and if you want to write sex I enjoy sex that isn't the most perfect thing ever.

Dislikes: Gore/vore, mpreg, pwps, character bashing, soulbonding/sentinel-guide/abo/mating/heat!fic type things unless they are a subversion or deconstruction of those tropes. Example would be a Sentinel/Guide AU where the whole mating thing is just something put out by the romance novel industry that caught on and, really, Character A would like it if Character B just got laid, like three hours ago, because they're driving them to contemplate Sentinelcide.

And prompts!

Request 1
Fandom: Beyond (concept film)
Character: Arya (Beyond)
Prompt: Exploration of the world? Expansion, back story, something about the door? There's a lot of stuff to explore here. How does Arya feel about being the last of her family?

Further ramblings:

If you haven't seen it you can watch Beyond here at the Mary Sue. It has been picked up for a feature length film, but I really rather love this little 8 minute movie.

Request 2
Fandom: Firefly
Character: Simon Tam
Prompt: Simon Tam. I'd love something with his past colliding with his present. Discovering how he's changed and maybe he prefers the new Simon. Character stuff!

Further ramblings:

Simon is one of my favorite characters on the show and I love how much he changes as the show and movie progress. He's a very different person by the end of the movie than he was in the first episode. A change that would continue the longer he was out on Serenity. I'd really like something exploring the dynamic of past-Simon and present-Simon. If you want to do pairings I love Simon/Kaylee, dislike Simon/River, and am not actively opposed to all other pairings, though you'd probably have to sell me on them. I'm also open for past girl/boy friends of Simon's showing up.

Request 3
Fandom: Once Upon A Time (In Space) (Album)
Character: Any
Prompt: Something from the department of back story? Snow and Rose's childhood, Snow meeting Cinders, Cinder's journey during the war, anything about Red Riding Hood.

Further ramblings:

If you haven't listened to Once Upon A Time (In Space) you should. You can do so here for free. And, you know, back story it up.

Request 4
Fandom: Darker Than BLACK
Character: Pai (Darker Than BLACK) Hei (Darker Than BLACK)
Prompt: Something about their relationship? No incest please. But maybe how Hei dealt with Pai becoming a contractor and what he did to stay with her? Pai realizing what she'll do to keep Hei safe? *flaily hands* Brother-sister stuff?

Further ramblings:

Pai and Hei's relationship is probably the most important one throughout the course of the show. It's the ultimate backbone on which everything else is built. I'd love something exploring that.

On the off chance that you're still looking for this to be written (my apologies):

Example would be a Sentinel/Guide AU where the whole mating thing is just something put out by the romance novel industry that caught on and, really, Character A would like it if Character B just got laid, like three hours ago, because they're driving them to contemplate Sentinelcide.

Prompt specific stuff:

Request 1
Fandom: Atomic Robo (Comics)
Character: Dr. Dinosaur
Prompt:Dr. Dinosaur back story! Make something up or figure out how to make his "official" back story work.

Other ramblings: Like I said backstory for Dr. Dinosaur. Where did he really come from? Was it really crystals and time travel? Alternatively his thought process leading up to any of his interactions with Atomic Robo. But, yes, this prompt is pretty much brought to you by the department of backstory.

Request 2
Fandom: Scarlet Spider (Comics)
Characters: Kaine Parker (Scarlet Spider), María Aracely Penalba (Scarlet Spider)
Prompt: Hotel shenanigans. Not everything can be super serious time for these two, let's have some down time. What do they do to pass the time in their penthouse suite? Friendship fic rather than pairing fic please.

Other ramblings: There's so much we don't see these two do. How do they pass the time with all of their money and no need to work? There was that brief montage of them swimming and getting massages that was one of my favorite throw away bits in the comic. Just these two hanging out, being bros.

Request 3
Fandom: Ame-Comi Girls
Chracter: White Canary (Ame-Comi Girls)
Prompt: We didn't get a whole lot about her. Maybe some expansion on her back story? How she fits in with the team? Does she partake in a career change or does she stay where she is and how does that get treated?

Other ramblings: Another prompt brought to you by the department of backstory. I'd love to know more about her life growing up unable to talk above a whisper. How was she treated? Does she know sign language? Alternatively how does joining the Justice League effect her life?

Anyways, have fun.

Snowflake Challenge Day Three

s&s-assigned
Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I was having a hard time figuring out what I wanted to do for this. But going through my bookmarks at AO3 I discovered the perfect theme. Completely ridiculous Black Books crossovers. I think they should probably speak for themselves.

Bernard and the Girls (1943 words) by ladyswarthington
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Black Books, Full House, Black Books/Full House
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Bernard Black, Michelle Tanner, DJ Tanner, Stephanie Tanner, Manny Bianco
Additional Tags: Crossover, slightly cracked, reluctant adoption
Summary:

Bernard gets an unexpected surprise at the book shop when three newly orphaned, blonde-haired sisters show up and expect a much warmer living environment than he can provide.

(I wrote this in October 2012, and have just gotten around to publishing it. It's a crazy crossover, but those with mutual knowledge of both TV shows should enjoy it.)

Noble and Most Ancient (7996 words) by Nomad
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Black Books, Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Characters: Bernard Black, Manny Bianco, Fran Katzenjammer
Additional Tags: Crossover
Summary:

Bernard's past catches up with him - by owl post.

That's Why They Call It A Gift (1571 words) by copperbadge
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett, Black Books
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Aziraphale/Crowley
Characters: Bernard Black, Manny Bianco, Fran Katzenjammer, Aziraphale, Crowley (Good Omens)
Additional Tags: Crossover, Profanity, Probably blasphemy too
Summary:

The true story of how Bernard Black acquired his bookshop.

Black Books crossovers are the best. Because anything shoved into the world of Black Books is hilarious. I really want a Young Wizards crossover.

Day 2

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Last year I did 3 of my comms and 3 of somebody else's comms. Which was fine, but one of the comments I made then was about how dead so very many of the communities here on DreamWidth are and how I think that contributes to the general death of journal based fandoms. So, threeseveral communities I wish had more activity.

[community profile] remix_goes_wild: Remix Goes Wild is a low pressure, long term, non-exchange remix challenge that allows you to remix your own fic as well as fic written by others. Using a set up based very loosely on Kink Bingo and the old table challenges, the challenge will be to do different types of remixes based on a list of remix prompts. In other words, you take Story A and remix it by changing the POV and then move on to Story B and remix it by adding a missing scene and then move on to Story C and...well you get the idea.

In addition to the goals listed above, the idea of this challenge is to push the boundaries of what constitutes a remix. How far can you change a story before it is no longer a remix of the original but a story very similar to the original? The prompts were designed with that in mind and also with the hope that people will have fun with them.

Basically it sounded awesome and didn't go very far before dying. I'd love to see it revived somehow. Either with more activity or a similar community. I don't know. Remixes! All the remixes!

[community profile] tea_musings: Sometimes the best part of the day is getting to relax with a cup of tea.

It's a community about tea! How awesome is that?

[community profile] takethistopcoat: (subtitle: It's Too Dangerous To Go Alone! Take This Top Coat) A community simply for sharing manicures, polish stories, tips, tricks, and talking all things nail polish.

Let's talk about nail polish people. Please? How about if I do some sad puppy dog eyes?

[community profile] who_minis: (subtitle: Doctor Who Minificathons) who_minis is inspired by mini-ficathon communities like femslash_minis, avatar_minis, and genfic_minis. At least once a month, we'll have a new round focusing on characters from Doctor Who, Torchwood, or The Sarah Jane Adventures, based on popular vote.

I really liked this community for the three months or so it ran. It was fun, low pressure, and I got to do different things than I normally did.

[community profile] heroines_fest: Heroines_fest is a fanfiction fest designed to produce more fic featuring female characters from comics. Any comics are welcome - Marvel, DC, Webcomics, Indie, etc.

I failed miserably at participating on the first round and then there was never a second round. It was sad.

[community profile] write_good: The primary purpose of this community is constructive criticism of prose works of fiction. Both fanfiction and original fiction are welcome.

It just sounds like fun. *pokes*

[community profile] whyilikethischaracter and [community profile] whyilikethisship because I enjoy personal manifestos about why people like things. I'll read them for canons I barely know.

I know, I know, I should be the change I seek.

Talky Meme: Big Finish

s&s-assigned
Continuing my day of catch up (and thus spam, apologies).

[personal profile] ghost2 asked for Big Finish.

Oh, Big Finish. Once upon a time I worked in the warehouse district of Minneapolis. Available and affordable parking was pretty much non-existent so I took the bus. It took me about a week to make my first mp3 player purchase and about two weeks after that I was thoroughly sick of listening to music and I had discovered that my motion sickness, in addition to making it so I can't read in moving vehicles, also apparently affected my ability to play games or watch videos. At which point I turned to torrents and audio books. After some searching I remembered a post I read about Doctor Who and audios and poking around turned up some stuff by Big Finish.

I had no idea what I was getting into. I thought they were audio books, I was not prepared for full cast dramas. I was still new enough to Doctor Who at that point that I could barely order the Doctors by regeneration, let alone figure out who Peri, Mel, and Ace were by the sound of their voices. It took me far too long to realize that Big Finish had made up some companions too. But I didn't look back after the first bus ride. I was hooked.

I spent about 2 hours total commuting to and from work back then. Which translates into about an audio a day. I do buy them when I can afford to, much easier now with the option for just the digital download, but I've torrented my fare share. Obviously. And that's how I passed the bus ride for a couple of years.

Then of course I got laid off and discovered that I just can't sit and listen to something without doing something else and that apparently the first thing I stop paying attention to is noise. So I stopped listening to Big Finish for several years. I put in the effort for Lucie Miller and Charley's last hurrah, but I do have trouble sitting and listening to things. Which is where my belief that I can enjoy and be good at things like knitting and cross stitch come from, despite all evidence to the contrary. I keep trying. Playing video games tends to result in me losing dialogue, but I manage an audio or two every few months these days. The march of finding things to occupy my body while I listen goes ever onward.

If you've ever wanted more of Paul McGann's Doctor then Big Finish is the place to go. They've done wonderful things with him and given him some of the best companions out there. And I'm not just saying that because Charley and Lucie are among my top five companions. Although they are.

The Sarah Jane Smith line is a fun take on what Sarah Jane did after leaving the Doctor. Made well before the Sarah Jane Adventures though.

Iris Wildthyme has her own range and it's fabulous. Just like her. I should probably read one of her books one of these days.

Bernice Summerfield can also be found. Her line follows the books until it doesn't.

Big Finish does more than Doctor Who, of course. They continually expand their ranges, but I'm particularly fond of the Stargate audios. Shell Game is a must listen for any Daniel/Vala people and Zero Point is a fantastic Zelenka piece. I keep meaning to pick up series 3 because it seems to be about Daniel and Vala becoming space pirates, but I keep balking at dropping $50 on it.

There's also a Highlander line that I haven't listened to, but has gotten good reviews.

And of course there's Sapphire and Steel which was on my original Complete Big Finish torrent that took me like 2 weeks to finish downloading. I listened to the first one on a whim and was intrigued enough to keep listening despite having no clue what the hell was going on. I listened to the first 2 series before finding the dvds for the tv show on Amazon and buying them. So good. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Cosmic Horror or Creepypasta.

All in all Big Finish has 63 ranges to choose from. Ranging from Dorian Grey to Robin Hood to Blake's 7. The Doctor goes from the main line that rotates between Doctors Five through Eight, to Unbound (the what if? of the Big Finish world, I recommend He jests at scars...), to the Stage Plays, to the Untold Stories (things that were almost episodes, but weren't). You can try some out with the always on sale with a rotating stock Big Finish for a fiver.

Basically Big Finish is great.

Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oddly enough I'm gonna open this up with some Supernatural. Specifically Images of Broken Light which is the only big bang fic I've ever finished. It's Dean/Alistair and I tend to get the nicest comments on it to this day (that I don't respond to, it's not you it's me). Despite all of my ~feelings~ about Supernatural these days I'm still very proud of the fic.

Second up we've got The Terrors and Triumphs of Space Piracy: A Girl's Own Paper which is my Charley/Mel space pirates series of somewhat uneven writing (some of it's quite good, some of it is pure rubbish). It was the first time I'd ever decided to write a sequel to another fic and thus my first series. I used to dream of doing a proper, long, heist fic for this verse. I've come to terms with the fact that it's probably never going to happen. But a girl can dream.

Lastly I give you my St. Trinian's primer that has withstood the test of timefour years fairly well. I've been thinking I should post it on AO3 so I can stop losing track of it. And perhaps fix some wording.

Yuletide fic for me!

This year was a bit of an embarrassment of wealth.

My main gift was an adorable Sword Art Online fic. (At least I think it was my main, it was put up really early though so I think it was.) It's got Kirito and Asuna very early on in Aincard, being their adorkable selves.

Then I got 3 Ghost Soup fics! I adore the fake fandom for Ghost Soup and these three are perfect fics. Two of them are connected and I suspect written by the same people, or at least two people working together. They are brilliant. And the extra work put into the second is astounding.

Talky Meme: Non-mainstream holidays

s&s-assigned
I am attempting to catch up before the end of the year. We'll see how that goes.

[personal profile] elf requested non-traditional holidays.

So, I don't really celebrate holidays, mainstream or not. There aren't any that really call to me. I think part of it for the well known ones is that I work at a taxi company and all the big holidays are work days for us.

Non-mainstream holidays are something I tried to get into celebrating at one point, but I'm terrible at keeping track of time and I kept missing them. Which makes it hard to start a tradition of celebration.

I do take the week of the 4th of July off every year. But that tends to have more to do with needing to use my vacation time before I lose it than anything else. But it's kinda become a tradition.

Working at a cab company in Minnesota at least 80% of our drivers are Muslim. So the day after the last day of Ramadan is always a day of celebration for me. I respect anyone who can fast from sun up to sun down for about a month. But by the end of that month people tend to get really cranky and hard to deal with, understandably cranky, but cranky and hard to deal with non-the-less. (Not to mention the customers who don't understand why they can't get a cab after sun down.) This year Ramadan fell in July, a July filled with above average temps and tempers ran foul very early on. I mean I'd rather the drivers saved up their good will for the passengers than for me, but still.

But back on point Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is a big party day. All the Muslim drivers take the day off. Which means, because of the Lunar calendar, we get about 12-24 hours to prepare for not having any drivers. It's a fun day. The day after Eid al-Fitr though is fantastic. Everyone is back at work and they're happy and helpful and not at all cranky anymore. It is a great day in my life.

I think perhaps in 2014 I shall make an attempt to find holidays I can look forward to celebrating.

Managed to post my Yuletide fic and the pinch hit I grabbed. Although I decided to watch part one of the Hogfather rather than go over the beta notes for that so the copy up on AO3 is still titled "this still needs to be beta'd" but it's there! Huzzah!

Looks at the treats, decided that there was just too much to sort through and I'd rather stuff [community profile] fandom_stocking anyways, so I'll start looking for those to stuff. As per usual I'll be going by fandom and not by people I know. So, normal disclaimer about not feeling obligated to put anything in my stocking, yadda yadda.

...I don't wanna go to work tomorrow. I want to get a winter vacation again like I did when I was in school.
